Other requirements
When you have cheked the requirements described in the previous section, please follow the following steps to install Pimmy.
Pimmy is distributed in two editions:
Setup program is named "pimmyXYZ-setup.exe" where XYZ is the version. Please note that on our web site this file may be compressed into a ZIP file due to anti-virus policy. In that situation you will need to expand the file before continuing.
Setup
Update
WARNING: if Pimmy has been registered as main Windows mail or newsgroup program, it is necessary to remove these registrations using Pimmy options before removing Pimmy. Pimmy removal will not automatically remove these registrations from "Windows Registry".
WARNING: all files containing data are not removed, in particular configuration file, address book, all folders and all messages are not removed. A subsequent Pimmy setup will use the same configuration. If you want to remove all files you must manually delete the folder where you have installed Pimmy.
Compressed file is named "pimmyXYZ-portable-LL.zip" where XYZ is the version and LL is a language code. It contains the following files:
| Nome file | Descrizione |
|---|---|
| Pimmy.exe | The program |
| Pimmy.lic | License file (optional) |
| Pimmy.Help.*.chm | Help files in a specific language (one or more) |
| Pimmy.Language.*.txt | Language files (zero, one or more) |
Setup
Update
WARNING: if Pimmy has been registered as main Windows mail or newsgroup program, it is necessary to remove these registrations using Pimmy options before removing Pimmy. Pimmy removal will not automatically remove these registrations from "Windows Registry".
If you are using Pimmy translated into a language different from English you can upgrade to this version but if your language is not currently available, Pimmy will add English as second language. In this way the most of Pimmy will be translated in your language and only the new menus, windows and sentences will be in English.
In case of problems (for instance if you see some Italian terms) please follow these steps to change languages manually:
Periodically check our web site for new language availability.
On each final release and on several test versions, configuration file Pimmy.cfg changes format to be able to manage new features and options.
Due to a technical matter on any format change the file is converted and old file is saved as Pimmy.cfg.<n> where <n> is a number that describes the file version (different from Pimmy version).
A similar behaviour regards the address book file, even if format changes less frequently. On format change file Pimmy.dir is saved as Pimmy.dir.<n> where <n> is a number that describes the file version (different from Pimmy version and from configuration file version).
Configuration file and address book file are not compatible with previuos versions of Pimmy (when format change occurs), while both will be read from all future releases of Pimmy. So, saved files are absolutely necessary to be able to install a previous version of Pimmy. We suggest you should not delete files "Pimmy.cfg.<n>" and "Pimmy.dir.<n>" or at least keep the ones with higher number, those related to the version of Pimmy used before last update. If these files are not available, to go back to an older version of Pimmy it will be necessary to write all configuration (and/or all address book).
To install an older version of Pimmy:
Of course all modifications occured to configuration (and to address book) after the creation of backup files will be lost, but you will be able to start from a not-too-old configuration. Best that starting from scratch. Moreover, please note that internal counters regarding downloaded messages (in particular on newsgroups) will be brought back to the day of the backup, so it could be possible that some messages will be downloaded again. Folders counters will be wrong too but you can fix them opening each folder.
We remind that it is very important to do regular backup of disks and in particular - regarding Pimmy - of configuration file, address book file, folders and messages. Due to limited program size, we suggest you should backup all folder where Pimmy has been installed.
