Pimmy 4.2 - What's new
IMPORTANT for 4.0 users
Since version 4.1 and so in this 4.2 too the configuration file and the address book file format have been changed and will be converted at first start of this version. The new files could not be read by the previous versions of Pimmy . The old files will be kept as "Pimmy.cfg.49" and "Pimmy.dir.2". Before installing this version please carefully read chapter Important note on Pimmy update and configuration files.
4.1 users
Compared to version 4.1 no format changes have taken place so you can go back from 4.2 to 4.1 in any moment . In this situation any group in the address book will be converted to a contact with the member list as address.
Summary
Main new features
These are the main new features of this release compared to Pimmy 4.1
- Groups in the address book
- Advanced search in all folders
- Search for unread messages
- Filters based upon messages
- New filter management window
Groups
The address book can now contain groups of contacts which may be used to send a message to several persons. A group can contain an unlimited number of contacts and even other groups. The program avoids cycles automatically. The alias of each group must be different either from other groups and other contacts.
In the message editing window a group may be used as it is a contact. Before the sending the group is automatically expanded and replaced with all the addresses of the members of the group. It is also possible to expand the group manually with the proper command. If a message is saved as a draft the group is not expanded, whereas the sent messages have the group expanded.
In the message list window and in the message editing window new commands are available to add the sender address, the address of one or more recipients or an address in the text to a group. If the address is not present in the address book Pimmy lets you add it.
In the filter window a new rule can be used to check for the presence of an address in a group. Please note that the "Forward" action of filters does not work on groups but only on single contacts.
Searching for messages
The message search feature has been dramaticaly improved and now lets you search all folders or the selected folders or the open folder for messages. Many search criterias are available. As usual this feature is also available to search mailboxes, newsgroups and RSS channels. In this situation if the text of a message is not in the cache is will not be downloaded. It is also possibile to search an external message source, as a MBOX file.
The search feature is available in the main windows with a new button and new menu commands and in the message list window where you can search for messages and display the list of all messages found or go to the first / next message found. In the result list you can change the search criteria. In this list a new column has been added to show the folder where the message is present.
Hot keys and names changed:
- In the main window CTRL + F no longer searches for a contact in the address book but opens the search window on all folders.
- In the main window CTRL + H searches all folders for all unread messages
- In the message list window CTRL + F no longer goes to the first message found but opens the search window; the result list will be displayed in a new window. Moreover CTRL + G no longer filters the list but goes to the first message found.
- The verb "Find" has been replaced by "Search".
Notes:
- all search criterias are in AND that means that all criteria must be satisfied
- FROM/TO fields may contain an address book alias and the related e-mail address will be searched for
- TO field may be used with both mail messages and newsgroup messages
- in the result list window the command "Download using Message-ID" and all "Download thread" commands are not available; the command "Remove attachments" is only available on messages of folders

Corrections
Message editing
- Expanding a ZIP file with password could truncate files bigger than 16KB. Under certain conditions the operation hung the program.
- ZIP file expansion treated the time of the contained file as UTC instead of local
- Saving more attachments did not warn about the presence of the files and created new files with (2) or (3) suffix. Now it warns and ask whether you want to overwrite the existing file or use a prefix or choose a new name.
- In case of error during saving of an attachment the error description was not displayed.
- The command "Expand (ZIP)" was available also on attachment not ZIP
Mailboxes
- A zero lenght message in a IMAP mailbox blocked the downloading.
RSS channels
- Import and export of channel list did not manage special characters properly.
Address book
- Under certain conditions the import did not use the alias in the file.
Filters
- Searching subject and text for more words failed if a word was in the subject and a word in the text.
Accessibility
- Simple text boxes were always treated as they contained passwords
- Message list: the CTRL+SPACE key did not select the messages but scrolled the preview pane
- Message list: in presence of a screen reader and with messages with long subject Pimmy crashed
- Message window: the label for the message text box was missing
